Dear Parents/Guardians,
This Friday your student will be able to retake last week’s vocabulary test if he or she received below a 90% on the test. If your student scored a 90% or above on that test, then he or she will have an option as to whether or not he or she would like to retake it. I will then put the higher of the two grades in my grade book. The vocabulary words are listed below. Please make sure your student knows the spelling, definition, and an example of each word. Please make sure your student studies his or her words every night this week.
1. simile: Comparing two things using like or as.
2. metaphor: Comparing two things without using like or as.
3. hyperbole: Big exaggeration
4. personification: Giving something human qualities
5. cliché: A familiar or over commonly used word or phrase
6. idiom: An expression that does not mean what you are actually saying
7. onomatopoeia: A word that sounds like the noise it makes
8. alliteration: Repetition of the beginning letter; similar to a tongue twister.
9. imagery: Things in the poem that you can see, feel, smell, taste, or touch.
10. interpret: To explain the meaning of information, words, or actions.
Also, please remind your student that he or she is required to take an Accelerated Reader test each week. These tests help our students increase their overall reading comprehension and gives them a purpose to read. If your student completes his or her nightly reading log, then he or she will be ready to take a test on that book that week. Your student is given time in the morning and in the afternoon to take a test. His or her weekly average is then recorded in my grade book each week as a homework grade. Unfortunately, this grade cannot be made up since it is that week’s average. Your student’s current reading level and all of your student’s AR test scores from this year will be sent home in this week's Tuesday Folder. Please let me know if you have any questions of concerns.
Kind regards,
Ms. Anderson
